New Cluster for Applied AI
The cluster will contribute to Norway taking a leading position within profitable and sustainable application of AI in a business perspective.
The fast development within digital technologies has led many public and private enterprises to consider, or have started, to apply artificial intelligence (AI) in operational improvement, effectivization, and to product and service development.
New technology and business innovation open new aras for application of AI, and the cluster will be a hub for collecting these opportunities. Several reports and strategies, for instance Digital21, state that knowledge about and ability to exploit the competetive advantages that AI provides, is criticial in making organizations capable of creating competetive innovation in the future.
- The new Cluster for Applied AI will be managed and operated by Smart Innovation Norway.
- The cluster will exist in parallell with Smart Innovation Norway’s first cluster, NCE Smart Energy Markets.
- 44 partners from the business side, public sector, and academia are onboard so far.
- The cluster fits actors who use AI today or have decided to do so.

Role of the cluster
The cluster will function as a phsyical and digital meeting hub for relevant actors within the field of applied AI. The cluster members will get the opportunity to learn from each other, collaborate in innovation projects, make business connections, work with other innovation systems, and work with terms and conditions.
The cluster facilitates and accelerates the opportunities within increased collaboration in all of these areas, and hopes to facilitate for sharing of data, infrastructure and other technology that the actors otherwise would not be able to invest in. The cluster is an independent part of Smart Innovation Norway’s innovation platform. As part of Smart Innovation Norway (SIN), the cluster can exploit experience, competence and activities from all of SIN’s innovation platform and network.

The cluster is made by and for the business world and targets small and midsize businesses (SMB’s) which already use applied artificial intelligence today or plan on using AI in their business.

Cluster for applied AI skal skape nye arbeidsplasser og bærekraftig utvikling basert på rett anvendelse av AI. Følgende delmål er identifisert:
- Oppnå ledende kompetanse innen klyngen vedrørende anvendelse av AI innen våre markeder.
- Kommersialisering og anvendelse. Virksomheter innen våre markeder tar i bruk bærekraftig AI-teknologi og løsninger fra klyngens medlemmer for å løse sine utfordringer.
- Internasjonalisering. Klyngens medlemmer får internasjonal gjennomslagskraft og virksomhet.
- Økosystem for innovasjon. Klyngen er levedyktig og velfungerende.

The vision is concretizised in the objectives. We see a world in which Norwegian businesses are better equipped to use AI in the best interest of themselves and society. In the report, Digital21, AI is identified as a critical competence area across different businesses, especially regarding the ability to innovate. Artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT) and autonomous systems are considered important areas of expertise for Norway in the years to come. With collaboration that create synergies across businesses, borders and academic communities, we believe Norway can take a leading position within sustainable, applied AI.
